DRAWING   

DRAWING FUNDAMENTALS
Explore the fundamental concepts of drawing such as line, shape, form, volume, spatial relationships, and perspective while working with a variety of drawing materials. Focus will be placed on learning how to see the world around us and translating this newfound vision into the two-dimensional world of drawing. Students will study various artists along with their styles and influences in art history. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: None.

 

   FIGURE DRAWING
Explore classical as well as contemporary figure drawing techniques and approaches to developing the human form. Emphasis is placed upon observation, anatomy, structure, line quality, volume, composition and originality. Techniques with graphite, charcoal, conté and pastel are demonstrated and developed. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals recommended; portfolio review required for intermediate/advanced levels.

FOCUS ON HANDS & FEET NEW
Learning how to draw the human hand and foot is necessary in order to be able to create believable drawings and paintings of the figure. Emphasis is placed on observation, anatomy, structure, line quality and volume. Students work towards the goal of seeing and drawing the hand and foot accurately in this short course. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals and Figure Drawing.

PORTRAIT DRAWING
An in-depth study of the architecture of the human head is the foundation of good portraiture. Learn about proportion, structure, features of the face, likeness, and how to visualize and draw the head from different angles. Line, gesture, value, and mass are discussed and explored. Students draw directly from the model, working toward the goals of accuracy and personal expression. Varied media will be used. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals recommended.

ART OF COLOR
Students will be guided through a variety of demonstrations and exercises including color mixing, understanding color interaction, and learning about color systems devised by artists throughout the centuries. Supplies included. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals recommended.

Intermediate as well as advanced artists will be challenged by this unique and intensive art making experience. Break through old thinking to reach higher levels of skill and understanding while gaining confidence and experience in a very short period of time. Working with a specific skill, technique or concept, students will combine drawing, painting and collage to create 10 mixed media pieces in 10 weeks. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals and Painting Fundamentals.

PAINTING    

PAINTING FUNDAMENTALS
Explore the basic techniques and concepts of painting such as color theory, composition, color mixing, brushwork, blending and glazes. Emphasis is placed on developing skills and pursuing an imaginative and personal approach. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals. Drawing Techniques recommended.

CLASSICAL PAINTING FUNDAMENTALS - oil only NEW
The philosophy and techniques of traditional oil painting will be introduced, including value, color, brushwork and edge control. Learn how to create a sense of light, depth and atmosphere, as well as the illusion of a variety of textures by painting a still life, portrait and landscape. Students will acquire a deeper understanding of color harmony, compositional unity and painting with an intention and concept. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals. Drawing Techniques recommended.

PAINTING

Painting techniques and composition are taught with an emphasis on developing skills and pursuing an imaginative and personal approach. Students work from photos or still lifes depending on their needs and interests. Individualized instruction is emphasized and students work at their own pace. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals and Painting Fundamentals. Drawing Techniques recommended.

QUICK STILL LIFE & LANDSCAPE STUDIES NEW
Create paintings by learning how to include only what is necessary and important, quickly state colors and values, and make split-second decisions. Short studies can teach students how to retain a fresh quality in their more detailed paintings and are a great way to get rid of bad painting habits. Experiment with color, composition, value, brushwork, edge control and loosening up. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals and Painting Fundamentals. Any student wishing to work with acrylics must have acrylic painting experience.

PORTRAIT PAINTING
Students will learn to mix flesh tones using the properties of color including value, temperature and saturation. Improve your seeing skills and your ability to capture a likeness by taking advantage of the planes of the face, light and shadow shapes, and by learning to discern the subtle differences each face has to offer. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals, Portrait Drawing and Painting Fundamentals. Drawing Techniques recommended.

Develop techniques that create rich textural surfaces, glazed and stained fields of color, and aesthetic ways of organizing space. The strength, sensitivity and rhythm of form, line, value, shape, pattern and color will be examined. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals. Introduction to Abstraction and Painting Fundamentals recommended.

FIGURE SCULPTURE
Emphasis is placed on the head, torso and structural anatomy as sculpture is explored in a creative, historical and instructive fashion. Student furnishes own supplies, firing fees additional. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals and Figure Drawing recommended.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Enhance your way of seeing and develop your aesthetic, photographic vision. Through slides, discussion, historical study and critiques, students will learn technical aspects of photography with the primary emphasis on guided viewing and creative camera work. Student furnishes fully manual digital or non-digital camera, film and processing. Prerequisites: None for beginners; Beginning Photography and/or portfolio review required for intermediate/advanced levels.

MONOTYPES: FOCUS ON THE FIGURE
Learn about the art of monotype printmaking as you paint and draw from the model using specialty inks, a range of tools, and a press to transfer your images. Students will learn additive, subtractive and other painterly applications. Monotype supplies included, except for paper which will be available for purchase. Student furnishes own drawing supplies and brushes. Prerequisites: Figure drawing and painting experience.

PRIVATE TUTORING AND CRITIQUES
Private tutoring for all levels of students as well as private critiques for intermediate and advanced students and professional artists may be arranged. The fee is $100 per hour, supplies additional. It is not necessary for the individual(s) to be currently attending a class at Brentwood Art Center. Sessions for groups of two or more students also available; please inquire.
