DRAWING   

DRAWING FUNDAMENTALS
Explore the fundamental concepts of drawing such as line, volume and perspective while working with a variety of drawing materials. Focus will be placed on learning how to see the world around us and translating this newfound vision into the two-dimensional world of drawing. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: None.

DRAWING TECHNIQUES
Develop enhanced observational drawing skills as you further
investigate line, value, form, perspective, texture and color. Learn to create dynamic and compelling drawings using charcoal, graphite pencil, pen and ink, colored pencils and various other media.
Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals.

COMPOSITION AND DESIGN
Develop your visual communication skills and explore the devices
that artists use to direct the viewer’s attention and ability to “read” a painting. Color, value, movement, balance, texture, shape, and other techniques and concepts will be used to create well-designed,
harmonious and unified images. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals. Drawing Techniques and Painting Fundamentals recommended.

ART OF COLOR NEW (13 weeks, 1/11-4/4)
Understanding how color works allows artists to create more emotional imagery. Students will be guided through a variety of demonstrations and exercises including color mixing, understanding
color interaction, and learning about color systems devised by artists throughout the centuries. Supplies included. Prerequisite: None.

   FIGURE DRAWING
Explore classical as well as contemporary figure drawing techniques and approaches to developing the human form. Emphasis is placed upon observation, anatomy, structure, line quality, volume, composition and originality. Techniques with graphite, charcoal, conté and pastel are demonstrated and developed. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals recommended. Portfolio review required for intermediate and advanced levels.

PORTRAIT DRAWING
An in-depth study of the architecture of the human head is the foundation of good portraiture. Learn about proportion, structure, features of the face, likeness, and how to visualize and draw the head from different angles. Line, gesture, value, and mass are discussed and explored. Students draw directly from the model, working toward the goals of accuracy and personal expression. Varied media will be used. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals recommended.

9 DRAWINGS • 9 WEEKS NEW
Intermediate as well as advanced students will be challenged by this new, unique and intensive drawing experience. Break through old thinking to reach higher levels of skill and understanding as you work with a specific skill, technique or concept to create a new drawing each week. Gain confidence and experience in a very short period of time as you create 9 drawings in 9 weeks. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals. Drawing Techniques recommended.

PAINTING    

PAINTING FUNDAMENTALS
Explore the basic techniques and concepts of painting such as color theory, composition, color mixing, brushwork, blending and glazes. Emphasis is placed on developing skills and pursuing an imaginative and personal approach. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals. Drawing Techniques recommended.

CLASSICAL PAINTING FUNDAMENTALS - oil only NEW
The philosophy and techniques of traditional oil painting will be introduced, including value, color, brushwork and edge control.
Learn how to create a sense of light, depth and atmosphere, as well as the illusion of a variety of textures by painting a still life, portrait and landscape. Students will acquire a deeper understanding of color harmony, compositional unity and painting with an intention and concept. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals. Drawing Techniques recommended.

PAINTING
Painting techniques and composition are taught with an emphasis on developing skills and pursuing an imaginative and personal approach. Students work from photos or still lifes depending on their needs and interests. Classes noted as “workshop” emphasize individualized instruction in contrast to sequentially developed curriculum, and students work at their own pace. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals; Drawing Techniques recommended. Portfolio review required for intermediate and advanced levels.

CLASSICAL PORTRAIT FUNDAMENTALS NEW
The philosophy and techniques of traditional oil painting as applied to portraiture will be introduced including planes, color, temperature, light and shadow, edge control, and brushwork. Learn how to evaluate bone structure, what to emphasize and deemphasize, how to translate the model's complexion into pigment, and how to compose your colors. Prerequisites: Drawings Fundamentals
and Classical Painting Fundamentals.

FIGURE PAINTING
Students will study traditional and contemporary techniques of mixing and applying paint, analyzing value, color and light, and developing volume. The instructor will also assist students in achieving an aesthetic and personally expressive style. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals, Figure Drawing and Beginning Painting; Drawing Techniques recommended.

PORTRAIT PAINTING
Students will learn to mix flesh tones using the properties of color including value, temperature, and saturation. Improve your seeing skills and your ability to capture a likeness by taking advantage of the planes of the face, light and shadow shapes and by learning to discern the subtle differences each face has to offer. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals, Portrait Drawing and Beginning Painting; Drawing Techniques recommended.

WATERCOLOR

This course offers a survey of traditional as well as experimental watercolor techniques. Learn to appreciate the unique beauty of this medium and its myriad of possibilities. Exploring techniques, interpreting varied subjects, and analyzing color theory will help students to develop a personal style and an understanding of the process of creating an aesthetic painting. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals.

9 PAINTINGS • 9 WEEKS NEW

INTRODUCTION TO ABSTRACTION
This course is designed for the student who is interested in creating abstract imagery but doesn’t know where to begin. Emphasis is placed on understanding abstraction and deconstruction as well as development of your own images. Students will be guided through a sequential series of both drawing and painting exercises which will help demystify the process. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals recommended.

ABSTRACT PAINTING
Develop techniques that create rich textural surfaces, glazed and stained fields of color, and aesthetic ways of organizing space. The strength, sensitivity and rhythm of form, line and value are examined. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals; Introduction to Abstraction recommended.

OTHER MEDIA  

FIGURE SCULPTURE
Emphasis is placed on the head, torso and structural anatomy as sculpture is explored in a creative, historical and instructive fashion. Student furnishes own supplies, firing fees additional. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals and Figure Drawing recommended.

PHOTOGRAPHY
This class will start you on a new way of seeing and developing your aesthetic, photographic vision. Through slides, discussion, historical study and critiques, students will learn technical aspects of photography with the primary emphasis on guided viewing and creative camera work. Student furnishes fully manual digital or non-digital camera, film and processing. Prerequisite: None. Portfolio review required for intermediate and advanced levels.

PRINTMAKING: MONOTYPES
This course is specifically designed for those with painting and drawing experience who would like to learn about the art of monotypes. Students will learn additive, subtractive and painterly
applications using specialty inks, a range of tools, and a press to
transfer images. Multi-plate prints, ghost prints and process will be the emphasis of this class. Monotype supplies included except for
paper, which will be available for purchase. Student furnishes own
drawing supplies. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals and
Painting Fundamentals.

PRIVATE TUTORING AND CRITIQUES
Private tutoring for all levels of students as well as private critiques for intermediate and advanced students and professional artists may be arranged. The fee is $100 per hour, supplies additional. It is not necessary for the individual(s) to be currently attending a class at Brentwood Art Center. Sessions for groups of two or more students also available; please inquire.
