INTRODUCTORY CLASSES

INTRODUCTION TO ART-MAKING NEW
Mixed Media, Drawing, and Drawing in Color (4 weeks each)
In this series of short courses, students who are new to art-making will be introduced to basic drawing and painting techniques, in order to help them evaluate whether they have an interest in art and in taking art classes. Students will have an opportunity to explore a select group of art materials by creating simple drawings and paintings. Students may enroll in one or all of these courses.
Taking them in order is recommended. Supplies included. Prerequisite: None.


DRAWING   

DRAWING FUNDAMENTALS
Explore the fundamental concepts of drawing such as line, shape, form, volume, spatial relationships, and perspective while working with a variety of drawing materials. Focus will be placed on learning how to see the world around us and translating this newfound vision into the two-dimensional world of drawing. Students will study various artists along with their styles and influences in art history. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: None.

DRAWING IN COLOR
Develop enhanced observational drawing skills as you further investigate line, value, form, perspective, texture and color. Create dynamic and compelling drawings using colored pencils, pastels, pen & ink, water soluble colored pencils and various other media. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals recommended.

Mixed Media Figure Drawing
   FIGURE DRAWING
Explore classical as well as contemporary figure drawing techniques and approaches to developing the human form. Emphasis is placed upon observation, anatomy, structure, line quality, volume, composition and originality. Techniques with graphite, charcoal, conté and pastel are demonstrated and developed. See the Schedule of Classes for mixed media and pastel/color drawing media options. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals recommended; portfolio review required for intermediate/advanced levels.

PORTRAIT DRAWING
An in-depth study of the architecture of the human head is the foundation of good portraiture. Learn about proportion, structure, features of the face, likeness, and how to visualize and draw the head from different angles. Line, gesture, value, and mass are discussed and explored. Students draw directly from the model, working toward the goals of accuracy and personal expression. Varied media will be used. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals recommended.

INTRODUCTION TO OIL AND ACRYLIC PAINTING
NEW
Students who are new to art making and are interested in painting or who are already painters and want to try the medium will be introduced to the basics of either oil or acrylic painting techniques. Students who are exploring painting for the first time should consider taking both classes (or Introduction to Oil and Acrylic Painting) to help them evaluate whether they have an interest in painting and taking painting classes and which type paint they would like to use. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals recommended.

PAINTING FUNDAMENTALS
Explore the basic techniques and concepts of painting such as color theory, composition, color mixing, brushwork, blending and glazes. Emphasis is placed on developing skills and pursuing an imaginative and personal approach. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals. Drawing Techniques recommended.

CLASSICAL PAINTING FUNDAMENTALS - oil only
The philosophy and techniques of traditional oil painting will be introduced, including value, color, brushwork and edge control.
Learn how to create a sense of light, depth and atmosphere, as well as the illusion of a variety of textures. Students will acquire a deeper understanding of color harmony, compositional unity and painting with an intention and concept. Student furnishes own supplies.
Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals. Drawing Techniques recommended.

PAINTING
Painting techniques and composition are taught with an emphasis on developing skills and pursuing an imaginative and personal approach. Students work from photos or still lifes depending on their needs and interests. Individualized instruction is emphasized and students work at their own pace. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals and Painting Fundamentals. Drawing Techniques recommended.

PORTRAIT & FIGURE PAINTING
Students will study traditional and contemporary methods for painting the portrait and figure. Explore techniques for mixing and applying paint, analyzing value, color and light, mixing flesh tones and developing volume. The instructor will assist students in capturing a likeness as well as in achieving an aesthetic and personally expressive style. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals, Portrait Drawing, Figure Drawing and Painting Fundamentals.

FIGURE PAINTING
Students will study traditional and contemporary techniques for mixing and applying paint, analyzing value, color and light, and developing volume. The instructor will also assist students in achieving an aesthetic and personally expressive style. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals, Figure Drawing, and Painting Fundamentals. Drawing Techniques recommended.

PORTRAIT PAINTING
Students will learn to mix flesh tones using the properties of color including value, temperature, and saturation. Improve your seeing skills and your ability to capture a likeness by taking advantage of the planes of the face, light and shadow shapes and by learning to discern the subtle differences each face has to offer. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals, Portrait Drawing and Beginning Painting; Drawing Techniques recommended.

PAINTING CONCEPTS & TECHNIQUES
NEW
Students will explore contemporary paintings as they are guided through a series of painting projects designed to further develop their own sense of subject matter, style and use of materials. Creativity and experimentation towards a personal vocabulary are encouraged. Instructor will also assist students in further developing their painting skills. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals and Painting Fundamentals recommended.

QUICK STILL LIFE & LANDSCAPE STUDIES NEW
Create paintings by learning how to include only what is necessary and important, quickly state colors and values, and make split-second decisions. Short studies can teach students how to retain a fresh quality in their more detailed paintings and are a great way to get rid of bad painting habits. Experiment with color, composition, value, brushwork, edge control and loosening up. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals and Painting Fundamentals. Any student wishing to work with acrylics must have acrylic painting experience.

WATERCOLOR
This course offers a survey of traditional as well as experimental watercolor techniques. Learn to appreciate the unique beauty of this medium and its myriad of possibilities. Exploring techniques, interpreting varied subjects, and analyzing color theory will help students to develop a personal style and an understanding of the process of creating an aesthetic painting. Beginning students will learn basic techniques and skills such as color mixing, brushwork, blending, resist, and composition. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals; Beginning Watercolor and portfolio review required for intermediate/advanced levels.

 

ABSTRACT PAINTING
Develop techniques that create rich textural surfaces, glazed and stained fields of color, and aesthetic ways of organizing space. The strength, sensitivity and rhythm of form, line, value, shape, pattern and color will be examined. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals. Introduction to Abstraction and Painting

OTHER MEDIA  

PRINTMAKING: MONOTYPES
This course is specifically designed for those with painting and drawing experience who would like to learn about the art of monotypes. Students will learn additive, subtractive and painterly
applications using specialty inks, a range of tools, and a press to
transfer images. Multi-plate prints, ghost prints and process will be the emphasis of this class. Monotype supplies included except for
paper, which will be available for purchase. Student furnishes own
drawing supplies. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals and
Painting Fundamentals.

MIXED MEDIA
Explore alternative approaches to art making by learning to combine and apply a broad range of different media in order to create a wide variety of aesthetic effects. Enrich your appreciation of art and stimulate your desire to express yourself through projects involving drawing, painting, collage, assemblage, found objects and other media and techniques.

FIGURE SCULPTURE
Emphasis is placed on the head, torso and structural anatomy as sculpture is explored in a creative, historical and instructive fashion. Student furnishes own supplies, firing fees additional. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals and Figure Drawing recommended.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Enhance your way of seeing and develop your aesthetic, photographic vision. Through slides, discussion, historical study and critiques, students will learn technical aspects of photography with the primary emphasis on guided viewing and creative camera work. Student furnishes fully manual digital camera, film and processing. Prerequisites: None for beginners; Beginning Photography and/or portfolio review required for intermediate/advanced levels.

PRIVATE TUTORING AND CRITIQUES
Private tutoring for all levels of students as well as private critiques for intermediate and advanced students and professional artists may be arranged. The fee is $100 per hour, supplies additional. It is not necessary for the individual(s) to be currently attending a class at Brentwood Art Center. Sessions for groups of two or more students also available; please inquire.
