DRAWING   

DRAWING FUNDAMENTALS - 13 weeks
Explore the fundamental concepts of drawing such as line, volume and perspective while working with a wide variety of drawing materials. Focus will be placed on learning how to see the world around us and translating this newfound vision into the two-dimensional world of drawing. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: None.

DRAWING TECHNIQUES NEW 10 weeks
Learn to hone your drawing skills and expand your potential as an artist with a more in-depth exploration of the tools and techniques used in drawing. The evolution of a drawing will unfold as you study how to take advantage of your drawing tools to get the most out of line, value and texture through a series of creative projects. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals.

PASTEL DRAWING NEW 10 weeks
This versatile medium used by such artists as Degas, Cassatt, and de Kooning combines the expressive sensibilities of drawing and painting using both hard and soft pastel. Form and composition are developed by layering pigment on the paper, blending, and building color using strokes and cross-hatching techniques. Students learn color theory concepts while working from a variety of subjects. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals.

   FIGURE DRAWING
Explore classical as well as contemporary figure drawing techniques and approaches to developing the human form. Emphasis is placed
upon observation, anatomy, structure, line quality, volume, originality and composition. Techniques with graphite, charcoal, conté, pastel and various papers are demonstrated and developed. Student
furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals recommended. Portfolio review required for intermediate and advanced levels.

FIGURE IN COLOR SERIES: Pen & Ink NEW
6 weeks
Learn to enhance your figure drawing with pastels, colored pencils, and pen and ink. This series of short classes will allow students to continue the study and practice of figure drawing while exploring the power and emotion of color and experimenting with different mediums. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals and Figure Drawing.

FASHION FIGURE DRAWING NEW Teen/Adult
This class offers an introduction to the world of fashion illustration. Emphasis will be placed on historic and current styles and trends as well as designs, fabrics, patterns and the creative process. Fee includes nude or costumed model. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Figure drawing experience.

PORTRAIT DRAWING
An in-depth study of the architecture of the human head is the foundation of good portraiture. Learn about proportion, structure,
features of the face, likeness, and how to visualize and draw the head from different angles. Line, gesture, value, and mass are discussed and explored. Students draw directly from the model, working toward the goals of accuracy and personal expression. Varied media will be used. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals recommended. Portfolio review required for intermediate and advanced levels.

PORTRAIT DRAWING & PAINTING NEW
(Please see “Portrait Drawing” description above.) This class adds the option of painting in acrylic or oil and allows students to explore mixed media drawing as well. Learn to mix flesh tones in both lights and shadows and how to take advantage of the properties of color such as temperature and saturation, as well as brushwork, to create realistic or expressionistic portraits. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals recommended.

INTRODUCTION TO ABSTRACTION NEW 10 weeks
This course is designed for the student who is interested in creating abstract imagery but doesn’t know where to begin. Emphasis is placed on understanding abstraction and deconstruction as well as development of your own images. Students will be guided through a sequential series of both drawing and painting exercises which will help demystify the process. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals recommended.

MIXED MEDIA
Combine painting, drawing, printmaking and other media to create aesthetic, personal works of art. Enrich your appreciation of art and stimulate your desire to express yourself by developing your eye and creativity. Student furnishes most supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals recommended. Portfolio review required for intermediate and advanced levels.

PAINTING    

ACRYLIC TECHNIQUES: CREATING EXPRESSIVE MARKS NEW 10 weeks
This course further explores the versatile medium of acrylic paint. Students will work with the painted, drawn, and expressive mark both as an abstract and representational element while experimenting with a mixed media approach to painting. Students will work on a variety of surfaces including paper and canvas while combining charcoal, pencil and pen with painting techniques such as staining, impasto and scumbling. Prerequisite: None.

PAINTING
Painting techniques and composition are taught with an emphasis on developing skills and pursuing an imaginative and personal approach
to the subject. Instructors often vary curriculum by having students work from photos, landscape or master studies depending on the needs and interests of the students. Classes noted as “workshop” emphasize individualized instruction in contrast to sequentially developed curriculum, and students work at their own pace. Student
furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals; Drawing Techniques recommended. Portfolio review required for intermediate and advanced levels.

INTRODUCTION TO CLASSICAL PAINTING NEW 9 weeks
Students will learn how to draw and paint still lifes using the same techniques and principles employed by the Old Masters. This course offers an overview of the traditions and theories of form, value, color, composition, and the sight-size method of drawing. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals recommended.

FIGURE PAINTING
Working from a model, students will study traditional and contemporary techniques of mixing and applying paint, analyzing value, color and light, and developing volume. The instructor will also assist students in achieving an aesthetic and personally expressive style. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals, Figure Drawing and Beginning Painting; Drawing Techniques recommended.

PAINTING: FIGURE, PORTRAIT, COSTUME NEW
Develop personal expression through color and brushwork based upon traditional and contemporary approaches to costumed figure and portrait painting. Explore the complexities and subtleties of skin tone, facial mood, fabric and folds, color, value, texture and various lighting conditions. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals, Figure Drawing and Beginning Painting; Drawing Techniques recommended.

WATERCOLOR
These courses offer a survey of traditional as well as experimental watercolor techniques. Learn to appreciate the unique beauty of this medium and its myriad of possibilities. Exploring techniques, interpreting varied subjects, and analyzing color theory will help students to develop a personal style and an understanding of the process of creating an aesthetic painting. Choose from a class with sequentially developed curriculum or one with an experimental, mixed media focus. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals. PORTRAIT IN WATERCOLOR NEW 10 weeks
Portraiture and watercolor come together in this short course, in which the skills and techniques necessary to paint the human head in watercolor are explored. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals, Portrait Drawing and Introduction to Watercolor.

FIGURE IN WATERCOLOR and/or PEN & INK NEW 9 weeks
Figure painting and watercolor or pen & ink (student's choice) come together in this short course, in which the skills and techniques necessary to paint the human body in watercolor and/or pen & ink are explored. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisites: Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals, Portrait Drawing and Introduction to Watercolor.

PLEIN AIR PAINTING NEW March 18 & 25
Learn to paint from the landscape while on location. Discussions will include the use of perspective, atmosphere, and color. The student
should work with media familiar to them such as pastel, oil, acrylic or watercolor. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: Experience in the chosen medium.

INTRODUCTION TO ABSTRACTION NEW 12 & 13 weeks

ABSTRACT PAINTING
Develop ideas and techniques that create rich textural surfaces, glazed and stained fields of color, and aesthetic ways of organizing space. The strength, sensitivity and rhythm of form, line and value are examined. The rewards of personal expression and the ability to unify and harmonize composition are the objectives of this course. FIGURE SCULPTURE
This course offers a unique and personal approach to three-dimensional form in terra cotta clay. Emphasis is placed on the head, torso and structural anatomy as sculpture is explored in a creative, historical and instructive fashion. Student furnishes own supplies; firing fees are additional. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals and Figure Drawing ecommended.

INTRODUCTION TO HAND-BUILT CERAMICS NEW
10 weeks

Students will learn basic hand-building techniques for making utilitarian and decorative ceramics while exploring the creative possibilities of this medium. Forming methods will include coil building, slab construction, and press molds. Students will also learn surface decoration techniques that will include creating texture through incisions or relief, and adding color using slips and glazes. Glazing materials included; student furnishes all other supplies; firing fees are additional. Prerequisite: None.
  




 

PHOTOGRAPHY NEW 9 & 10 weeks
This class will start you on a new way of looking and developing your aesthetic photographic vision. Through slides, discussion, historical study and critiques, students will learn technical aspects of photography with the primary emphasis on guided viewing and creative camera work. Student furnishes fully manual digital or nondigital camera, film and processing. Prerequisite: None. Portfolio review required for intermediate and advanced levels.

INTRODUCTION TO COLLAGE NEW 10 Weeks
Through the exploration of a variety of materials including paper, cardboard, felt, paint and magazines, students will learn how to create two- and three- dimensional compositions. This class will begin with basic concepts and progress toward more complex projects including contour silhouette cutting, narration and conceptual art while studying collages of past and contemporary artists. Craftsmanship, creativity and experimentation will be the focus. Student furnishes own supplies. Prerequisite: None.

CHILDREN'S BOOK ILLUSTRATION NEW 9 & 10 weeks
This course will help students develop and apply their drawing and painting skills to children’s books. Starting with the fundamentals of drawing and character development, students will explore the various techniques and styles that are used in children’s literature. All forms of expression will be welcomed and encouraged, from representational drawings to abstract imagery. Prerequisites: Drawing Fundamentals and Beginning Painting; Drawing Techniques recommended.

DEVELOPING A PERSONAL VOICE AS AN ARTIST NEW
8 weeks

Discover what it is you want to say in your work and develop the means to say it. Through exercises, projects and discussions you will be guided toward developing your unique artistic voice. Starting from each student’s individual interests and working in, explore personal responses to various themes by fortifying and harnessing skills in drawing, composition, and color theory to make more clear and powerful work. Be prepared for unexpected surprises. The student should work with media familiar to them such as pastel, acrylic or watercolor (excluding oil). Student furnishes own supplies. INTRODUCTION TO MONOTYPES & OPEN PRINT NEW

This course is specifically designed for those with painting or drawing experience who would like to learn about the art of monotypes. Students will learn additive, subtractive, and painterly applications using specialty inks, a range of tools, and a press to transfer images. Supplies included, excluding paper which will be available for purchase. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals. Beginning Painting recommended.

PRIVATE TUTORING AND CRITIQUES
Private tutoring for all levels of students as well as private critiques for intermediate and advanced students and professional artists may be arranged. The fee is $100 per hour, supplies additional. It is
not necessary for the individual to be currently attending a class at Brentwood Art Center. Sessions will be scheduled on an individual basis. Sessions for groups of two or more students also
available.
